Cockahoop

In the midst of so much doom and gloom, just wanted to pass on some personal good news and say thank you to all of you who swing by regularly, subscribe, and grace this blog with your perceptive and challenging comments. I signed my client agreement today with Curtis Brown! Have waited months - no, make that years, for this moment. It feels like we are one big step closer to seeing the books in print, and I'm cockahoop to be working with such a great agent. Anyway - just thought out of everyone, you'd all appreciate how this feels. Thanks to you all - your support and the pleasure of writing with you over the last couple of months has meant a great deal. Have a great weekend.

TODAY'S PROMPT: We've talked a lot recently about the importance of finding what makes you and your work unique. Having had an incredible offer to work with a brilliant design team on the new website next month, I've put together a folio of images for each book. This 'storybook' shown above plus Miles Davis plus the 112,000 word manuscript = the book at the moment. It's only a partial view - how I see and feel the book won't be how readers picture it, but it's a beginning. Until we can pick the thing off a shelf in a bookstore this is as real as it's going to get. It's an interesting exercise - why not give it a go? In advance of seeing your work published, why not make it real for you?

Congratulations. Is the book about Miles Davis then?

There are those who say the Davis album you referenced here is the quintessential jazz album. Nice to have such markers (I almost said milestones) in your career.

I hope your venture with CB takes you where you wish and I hope we get a chance to look in on the results.

Thank you Mr Bananas - much appreciated! No, it's fiction, but the music is interwoven in the story, and I'd be amazed if it hasn't informed the rhythm and feel of the book it got played so much during the rewrite.

I like Miles-stones Shelly! Thanks for your good wishes - let's hope so (still have a long road ahead but at least after today I can exhale slightly ..!)

Oh Kate, this is just great news. Curtis Brown is truly a biggie -- hearty congratulations.

I love sprawling ambitious projects like yours apparently will be. The mind staggers at the ability of people to throw a couple handfuls of otherwise mismatched media in the air, and have it land all nice and interwoven.

Is that a real storybook, or just like a, umm, stock-photo sort of thing? Either way, it's a treasure trove of potential plotlines!

Hi Jes - thank you, your good wishes are really appreciated. It is a real story/scrapbook with a mix of my photos, fragments, newspaper cuttings. I love ephemera and over the 10 years the book has been taking shape have collected hundreds of images ... hopefully as you say the designers will be able to look at a few pages of these and 'see' the book.

I wish that there were words that held enough weight for you to feel how thrilled I am for you! It's crazy - we have met in this virtual world. It's not like we've ever sat down and shot the shit over a pint and yet my hearty congratulations and excitement for you is as strong as though we had.

I so enjoy reading your words and am so thrilled that you are about to take such a huge and important step to expanding your audience (people have no idea how lucky they are with what is coming ) and most importantly, making your dream come true.

I celebrate you, Kate. Your hardwork, dedication and vision are truly inspiring. I look forward to hearing about the process and life and all that goes with it. For now, PLEASE make sure you celebrate you in a BIG way. Will the pilot be taking you out for a nice dinner?

Cheers to you!

Thank you Miss Scarlet - maybe we should do a graphology post one day and see if there's a 'writer's hand'?! Have a good one x

Natasha - thank you! Feels like we are launching off into exciting, uncharted territory. Hopefully it will be an entertaining ride for everyone. I can see a great future for us all, where we cheer on each other's successes around the world.

Pilot flies home tomorrow so big celebrations will wait - tonight the hound and I are putting our feet up in front of the fire with a glass of red (me) and a new bone (her).

Wowee- Congratulations, congratulations! I am so excited for you - truly.

And I absolutely LOVE that Miles D. album. It's one of my favorites.

Kate Lord Brown said...

Hey Mary - thank you! I know - what is it about that album? It's like the auditory equivalent of a massage ... no matter what is going on it just sends you.

Congrats and god luck with the rest of the journey! Love the making it closer to real idea. We'll see...

Thanks Marta. Yes - as writers we are so much 'in our heads' all the time, I found it helpful conjuring something real from the words and just thought to pass it on in case it helps any of you.

Unlike painters or craftsmen it's not like we can look at our work and say 'there's a landscape' or 'coffee table'. Until they are made into a book and out in the world our words are just floating around on loose sheets of paper.

The best music. It sounds like New York.

Continued good luck with your writing.

Kate Lord Brown said...

Hello inkspot - and thank you. You're so right - doesn't it just make you recall everything you love about the place? A large part of the book is New York/US based and 'Kind of Blue' really resonated.

Wow! That's a big old agent you've got yourself there. Well done!

Thanks Misssy - yes, feeling like a v small fish!

Hi Dan - thank you! Hope the studies are going well.

Congratulations a million times. I do love that scrapbook you made of images. That's a great idea. I should try it with my science fiction book... although it would be interesting to see what kind of things I could come up with for an alien planet.

I know this journey of yours is not over, but it really is such a huge deal. Good luck with the rest of it.

Kate Lord Brown said...

Hi Rowena - thanks so much. I'd *love* to see your sci-fi world! What fun to make that real - no limits at all!

Just popped in to say Hi and am immensely cheered to hear your news so good things are still happening. Cogratulations and jolly well done.

Wow, that’s wonderful news, Kate. Nice to see someone on their way to fulfilling their dreams. So much negativity these days, good to hear something positive. Looking forward to finding you in the bookshops.
I was just playing Miles at work last week – In A Silent Way. Something timeless about that man and his horn.

Cheers!
Son

Hello Pi - and welcome! Thanks for your good wishes. Yes - good things are afoot (let's hope it's catching!) Good news may be hard won at the moment, but it does make you appreciate it, doesn't it?!

Hi Son - thank you (I don't know how UK fiction fares in Norway, but it would be great to see the book on the shelves!) There's something about Davis - it's like he was painting with tones/sound. As you say - timeless.

Hi Emma and thank you - yes, have everything crossed (including a few things you would not imagine could possibly be crossed). Will be having a great big blogosphere party if all goes well!
