Dream On

Ladies and gentlemen - we are lucky people. Creativity is officially the key to career happiness (according to the UK's Creative & Cultural Skills, the Sector Skills Council for the creative and cultural industries). See what you think of these results:

TOP 10 DREAM JOBS FOR KIDS

1) Doctor/nurse
2) Vet
3) Footballer
4)Teacher
5) Actor/movie star
6)Writer
7) Dancer
8) Pilot
9) Pop star
10) Astronaut

TOP 10 DREAM JOBS FOR ADULTS

1) Writer
2) Teacher
3) Landscape gardener
4)Paramedic
5) Photographer
6) Police Office
7) Physiotherapist
8) Movie Director
9) Restaurant Owner
10) Musician

Those of us juggling several jobs (parent+writer+ ...) may recognise more than one dream come true there. Anyone still feeling remotely blue should take a stroll over to Running After My Hat (see the sidebar) - if Clarence hasn't done it for you, John's beautiful poem Starfish should. Dream On.

TODAY'S PROMPT: What did you want to be when you were a kid? What happened to those dreams? Why do you think everyone dreams of writing - why do so many people think they have a novel in them? If you've been able to make a living from your writing, have your dreams come true? Why not take some time with your journal and think of everything you dreamed you'd be, who you are, who you hope you can still become.

I do make a living from writing (mostly), but not from writing what I want to write- writing to order- that's life, isn't it? Even Einstein had to pay the bills! Still, it's a nice solitary break from doing my previous profession which was the least solitary thing you could ever think of; teaching.

I am heartened to think that I've had two of the most wanted professions in that top ten. I'm a little bit of a shoe in for director as well, being a corporate video director 20% of my time- but again it's directing to order, not what I'd necessarily direct if given the choice. But I consider myself lucky to have occupations that at least in some way indulge my creative side.

But you know what I think, I think writers write and directors direct whether they are being paid or not. People do exasperate me when they say things like "Oh, I've always wanted to...(insert ambition of choice here)"- especially when that ambition is something creative. If they really wanted to, they'd do it.

I'm pleased you're feeling more cheerful! And positive.
People don't realise how hard it is to write. I'm not sure if I have a novel inside me or the wherewithal to write one. Short stories are hard enough! It's the effort to make them seem effortless that's difficult!
I wanted to be an actress first... or a dancer. I had a large dressing-up box, so I'd dress up as a character and lo, I was imagining stories in my head...

According to my kindergartners, the top 5 are:
1. PIzza delivery man
2. Ballerina
3. Football player
4. Baseball player
5. Race Car driver.
I'm sure these results are more accurate. :-)

You know that makes a blue day a little brighter. I love seeing writer on both lists. I love being a writer and being able to make a living as a writer.

I think some people have such trouble connecting the dots between putting words on paper, to creating something (and finishing it), to making money at it. I still have relatives who scratch their heads...

I too hear all the time, you're so lucky that you can do what you love. There hasn't been much luck about it. Believe me, if I were lucky things would be going A lot better. It's just a question of doing it.

I'm proud that I just did it. Yep, that does make my day.

Top two! Woo hoo. Throw in artist (which I think intimidates people too much to dream about being, sadly) and that's my life. A living dream.

Hm.

'Course, I don't make a living at it... yet.

But then my life is not over. And I have made a living as a teacher, and probably will again.
I do have a dream of what my life will look like, and I am taking the steps to get there, even if those steps look like I am not achieving my dream... don't you think that the making of the dream is actually the living?

Misssy: That exasperates me, too! I don't think they mean it quite as, er, exasperatingly as it comes out. But especially when (insert ambition of choice here) is something that I myself have spent years and years doing, and hopefully doing better... I'm like, Yeah, and I've always wanted to be an industrial tycoon, maybe I'll be that tomorrow!

Kate: Can't take credit for "Starfish" at all; it's actually by Eleanor Lerman. But jeez do I love that poem.

I was rather schizoid about what I wanted to be, it changed every day, a bit like my five year old daughter who says "first I want to be a princess, then a rock star and then a kitten."
